JAMAICA DRU= GS FOR THE ELDERLY PROGRAMME

 

The Jamaica Drug for t= he Elderly Program (JADEP) is a public-private sector collaborative effort whi= ch was launched by the Ministry of Health in 1996. The Program is now managed = by the National Health Fund (NHF).

The objective of JADEP= is to improve access to Essential Drugs through payment subsidies for persons suffering from ten (10) chronic illnesses.

 

WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF JA= DEP?

 

All Jamaican residents, sixty years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with one or more of t= he conditions covered, are eligible to enroll for JADEP membership.=

THE ILLNESSES COVERED ARE:

·      =    Hypertension or high blood pressure

·      =    Diabetes or sugar

·      =    Glaucoma or pressure in the eyes

·      =    Cardiac or heart disease

·      =    Arthritis

·      =    Asthma

·      =    Vascular conditions or circulatory problems

·      =    Psychotic conditions

·      =    Benign Prostate hyperplasia

·      =    High Cholesterol

 

HOW DOES ONE ENROL FOR JADEP MEMBERSHIP?<= /p>

You can enroll for JAD= EP membership at any government health centers, Council for Senior Citizens or= at the National Health Fund.

You will need to take = along proof of age which can be one of the following:

·      =    birth certificate

·      =    passport

·      =    driver’s license

·      =    national (voter’s) identification (old one),

·      =    senior citizens identification,

·      =    letter from a Justice of the Peace (JP), medical doctor or pastor, verifyi= ng age.

If you cannot go to an enrolment centre you can ask someone to do so for you, but you must send the proof of age. <= /o:p>

Jamaica Drugs for the Elderly=
The Jamaica Drugs for the Elderly Program seeks to improve the health status of the elderly citizens by improving their access to pharmaceutical = care at a minimum cost. The program was conceived against the background of the rising cost of prescription drugs and the resulting difficulty which many persons suffering from chronic illnesses face in complying with the course = of treatment recommended by their doctors. Many of our senior citizens (60 yea= rs and over) are unable to provide for themselves and would normally find it difficult to access these drugs. While many are unable to work, the governm= ent takes responsibility for protecting their health. $52M was allocated to the= program for F/Y 2003/2004. Approximately 135,726 persons are registered to access d= rugs from participating pharmacies across the island.
